Black Soldier Fly Composter

IMG_0446This project was a total failure.

The idea of this project is that you create an area where the Black Soldier Fly ( BSF ) can enter and lay its eggs. The larva consumes the waste generating compost.

You then have a tube running around the edge allowing them to wriggle their way up and out. These can then be caught in a container and fed to chickens or fish.

The principal worked nicely, but I was unable to get any BSF in my setup. I am unsure if the BSF even live in South Australia.

There appear to be many people asking on forums if they are here, with no real answers.

After trying a number of times I kept ending up with house fly maggots and a smelly mess.
